ODL has a commitment to equality and diversity which includes addressing issues which affect Deaf oeople and people with hearing impairments.  As a result, we are looking for BSL communications support volunteers to help with our events and smaller gatherings.

What you’ll be doing

  • Being present at various times to support Deaf people and people with hearing impearments, through the use of BSL for meetings or in smaller one-to-one or slightly larger conversations.
  • Assisting ODL in developing an environment in which Deaf people and people with hearing impairment feel valued and supported.
  • Advising ODL management about best practice with regard to supporting people who are deaf or who have hearing impairment.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly capable individual, with the ability to communicate through British sign language. Volunteers will ideally be sensitive who are able to encourage good group dynamics and be mindful of the social needs of sometimes vulnerable individual members. Although experience working in a charity is not required, it is desirable.

Volunteers are required to attend any relevant training and two volunteer forums annually.


Volunteers should be committed to and competent in member, volunteer and organisation confidentiality, and mindful of Information Governance policy.
